Getting that first job is difficult. But wait, the challenge is not being selected by a company but how an employee is welcomed into the culture and environment. This is what is often referred to as the ‘onboarding process’ in HR terms. This process is followed by almost all companies today and they are making efforts to be as unique and efficient as possible because the companies understand how important employee onboarding is for them as a whole.

Today, with firms relying on technology for every process, the pandemic allowed them to try out different aspects that will be fruitful for their firm. Even with a low number of hirings during Covid-19, the onboarding process was followed without any hindrance even though it was done through an online medium. Now, the real question is, how do the employees feel about the process?

It is crucial to understand that not all hires are satisfied with the onboarding process that is done through the company. From an outsider’s point of view, the process could just be a simple checklist, but there is a lot of work done to create and execute the checklist.

Yet, some companies follow routine methods or nothing at all leading to an increase in employee turnover rate. That is the reason why it is extremely important to have a structured and efficient onboarding process.

What is employee onboarding?

Basically, employee onboarding is a process where a new hire is introduced to their roles, goals, and other necessary information that will be kept confidential. The process starts once the candidate accepts the offer letter and it lasts for about 3 to 4 months, which is subject to company policies. For a start, the onboarding process involves the following:

  • Pre-onboarding
  • Orientation
  • Role-specific training
  • Transitioning
  • Review

We hope the above step will make you relive those ‘onboarding’ days of yours. For years, companies have evolved with new trends and followed them to be in the spotlight among job seekers. The current trend is to provide various kits to the new joiners, but even with that, only a structured onboarding process will make a significant impact on the system.

When we look into the statistics, according to Deloitte, 79% of businesses consider onboarding to be the first priority among others. The first 45 days are extremely decisive and it could lead to bigger problems for the firms if it is not followed appropriately.

Reasons to improve the employee onboarding process:

It is reassuring.

If you have a well-planned structure of onboarding, then there is no reason for any new employee to feel left out. In fact, including personalised support for your new hires will help them focus on what is in-house in the new firm.

It demonstrates the culture.

Undoubtedly, a structured process will elevate your company and reflect the unique culture that is being followed. It demonstrates your business model, company values, communication practices, and other characteristics that make your company stand out.

When a company has an organised employee onboarding process, many things come into place and it restricts every possibility of ambiguity any new hire might feel in the initial days or weeks. Make sure that your new employees are happy and feel comfortable during the onboarding days. With a clear plan, they can focus on their work put their energy into things that matter and create an impact for the company and themselves as well.
