There are various reasons why an employee decides to stay in their current company. It could include work culture, flexibility, loving the work they do, cordial respect with the manager, and much more. However, some employees find it difficult to continue in the firm and decide to quit. Even though it is a difficult decision to make, it is for the best. On the other hand, companies are forced to leave the employee. Sometimes, firms try to retain top-performing employees by offering them more pay and other benefits.

Today, it has become important to acquire skills to face the fast-changing operating models followed by companies. Different kinds of retention strategies are followed by companies to retain their best employees. It is a known fact that replacing a talent costs more than the salary that is paid by the company to the particular employee. While talent is at great risk, companies are bidding to keep their productive employees happy and satisfied at work. Let us have a glance at why it is more important to retain talent than replace them.

Importance of employee retention

First off, let us understand the term Employee Retention. For any company, Employee Retention is a process where they try to retain employees and reduce their turnover rate. An increased employee turnover rate is dangerous for the company’s future and growth. Having the right amount of employees is the need of the hour and even if half of the employees decide to shift to other firms, it is a great threat. This is the reason why companies are involved in retention strategies. In simple words, retention rate defines the satisfaction of your employees and how you treat employees on the whole.

Workable tips to retain productive employees

In the current advanced working conditions, employees expect a lot. Flexibility and work-life balance are the top priorities. Work overload is not exaggerated or entertained by any employee as it causes stress and anxiety issues. Any lack of flexible schedule or career growth opportunities will be a huge letdown to the people. This opens up the need for retaining employees who are performing well and are productive. Here are a few tips that can be followed by companies in the process of retention.

#1:- Implement comprehensive hiring practices

Employee retention strategy starts with hiring. It is important to follow the right kind of hiring process that will suit the business requirements. Only when companies hire the right people for the job will the need to retain employees be reduced. This means people will work efficiently and be more productive. The recruitment process should be designed in such a way that you can understand the candidates and select if they are a good fit. Getting to know them better will be of great help to learn if they have the required skills or not.

#2:- Promote a supportive work environment

Employees can be competitive but not in a way that they stop helping or appreciating each other. The work environment today has to be inclusive and employees need to support each other to work for a common goal. This can be enforced by practising clear communication and transparency in the workplace. Along with this, providing benefits and perks will allow employees to rethink their decisions and stay in the company.

#3:- Proper training and development programs

A company that works for the growth of its employees is the best in the current business world. This is made sure by offering quality training and development programs to the employees where they can learn and improve their skills for the particular job. If employees are not trained properly for their jobs, it is a huge blunder that will cost the company more. This is when they feel the need to shift to other jobs. Proper employee retention through occasional training programs will be a better option.

#4:- Creating career development avenues

People join jobs to go further and improve. In addition to training programs to improve skills, companies need to provide avenues for career growth as well. This is probably the best way to encourage retention. Managers need to set up meetings frequently to discuss the expectations of the employees regarding where and how they want to be in the coming months or years and how they are going to utilize the opportunity that pops up in front of them.

#5:- Practice recognition of the employees

Employees feel great when they are recognized at work. Even with competition, if employees are rewarded for their performance, nothing will make them look for other job opportunities. Employee recognition is missing in many firms, which is a big setback for them. A peer recognition program can be set up where coworkers can nominate others and enhance their support.

Today, employees are ready to face open feedback that will help them improve their performance. Moreover, a proper work-life balance is also required to continue in the company. When companies take care of the employees, they will give their full support in the form of performance and results. For the same, diverse people are a necessity. Not just hire the right people, but they should also feel safe and secure in the workplace. Motivating them to do more every day will improve the chance of reducing the turnover rate by large numbers. Managers must work together with employees and work together to address various issues that create an impact on performance and engagement.
