In today’s rapidly evolving economy, there’s a growing gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. With the increasing demand for tech-driven roles, many employers face challenges in finding job-ready candidates. This is where the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) plays a transformative role.

Launched by the Government of India, NAPS helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience. It enables individuals to gain hands-on training, improve employability, and receive government-supported financial benefits—all while working in their desired industry.

What is NAPS?

The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) is aligned with the Apprentices Act, 1961, which mandates that industries have 2.5% to 15% of their workforce as apprentices. It offers job seekers the opportunity to learn on the job, earn a monthly stipend, and obtain a recognised certificate.

For employers, it helps build a future-ready talent pool. They can train apprentices based on company needs and even absorb them into full-time roles after completion.

NAPS also benefits those who may not have attended prestigious colleges, offering them a chance to gain real-world experience and increase their chances of employment in reputable organisations.

Eligibility Criteria

For Apprentices:

To apply under NAPS, an individual must:

  • Be a citizen of India

  • Be at least 14 years old

  • Hold an Aadhaar card and have a bank account

  • Provide self-attested photographs

  • Have no gaps in education during the registration process

Once training is complete, the apprentice can submit their documents and officially register on the portal.

For Employers:

  • Companies must register online or partner with a Training Provider (TP)

  • A formal agreement must be signed between the company and TP

  • The Government reimburses 25% of the apprentice stipend, up to ₹1500/month

  • Reimbursement currently goes to the employer, though direct trainee reimbursement is under discussion

For Training Providers:

  • No specific eligibility criteria under NAPS

  • Must offer a structured training curriculum

  • Responsible for tracking training outcomes, monitoring apprentice progress, and ensuring quality governance

  • The aim is to develop a skilled workforce aligned with industry needs

Benefits for Apprentices

Whether you’re new to the workforce or switching industries, NAPS offers a work-based learning path that combines practical experience with academic learning.

Key Benefits:

  • Earn while you learn:Receive a monthly stipend supported by the government

  • National Minimum Wage eligibility

  • Business benefits and paid leave, similar to regular employees

  • Hands-on learning: Most training takes place in real work environments

  • Flexible industry choices: Choose the field that aligns with your career goals

  • Guidance from experienced professionals and senior staff during training

  • Government-recognised certification upon completion

  • Enhanced employability with real-world experience on your resume

Unlike traditional academic routes, apprenticeships under NAPS offer an opportunity to build a career-focused skill set, increasing your chances of being hired by top employers.

Conclusion

NAPS is more than a training program—it’s a career-building pathway. It helps individuals gain the skills needed in today’s job market while giving companies access to talent they can shape to meet specific business needs.

Whether you’re an employer looking to future-proof your workforce or a candidate wanting to gain practical skills, NAPS offers the structure, support, and incentives to help you succeed.
